Betty Frances Bohannon Rountree, 98, passed away peacefully in her sleep at home on Thursday, September 25, 2025.
A native of Eastman, she was the daughter of the late James Mitchell Bohannon and Delia Roberts Bohannon. Betty graduated from Emanuel County Institute (ECI). On August 31, 1947, she married Charles Alden Rountree, Sr. Betty and Charles remained happily married until his death in 1987.
Betty was a former member of Swainsboro First Baptist Church and was a member of Bible Baptist Church in Savannah, where she served as the secretary of the Master's Sunday School Class. She was actively involved with the Girl Scouts, serving as a leader and cookie chair.
Throughout her life, Betty held several meaningful jobs. Notably, she worked at Mae’s Sew-N-Save Fabric until its closure and then spent 20 years at Peanut Butter Children’s Shop on Wilmington Island, which also eventually closed. After that, she worked at Hairport Beauty Salon until her retirement in 2019 at the age of 85. During World War II, she worked as a telephone operator for BellSouth.
Known for her exceptional cooking skills, Betty had a natural talent for creating delicious meals without ever measuring ingredients. She was passionate about sewing and was highly creative. Dedicated to her family, she always welcomed family and friends with a full table of food and a smile on Sundays.
In addition to her other activities, Betty served as a poll worker for many years in Chatham County, taking on the role of poll manager. She was a devoted supporter of the American Red Cross and regularly donated blood.
Throughout Betty’s remarkable 98 years of life, her greatest joy came from creating memories with her grandchildren. Whether she was baking cookies in the kitchen, playing games in the backyard, or simply sitting on the porch sharing laughter, Betty cherished every moment spent with them.
In addition to her parents and her husband, Betty was predeceased by two brothers, James and Charlie Bohannon; and a grandson, Jeremy Shane Williams.
Betty leaves behind two daughters, Emma Lorene “Emmalene” Rountree Youmans (P.O.), and Betty Colleen Rountree Williams; a son, Charles Alden Rountree, Jr. (Kim); six grandchildren, Vanessa Lorene Youmans Wilkes (Wes), Tiffany Shae Williams (Greg Gasque), Charles Alden Rountree, III (Kate), Valerie Lawson Youmans, Ryan Vaughn Rountree, and Marley Elizabeth Rountree; 12 great-grandchildren, Juddson, Amelia, Tristan, Taisley, Jadelyn, Jace, Jhett, Bentley, Adalynn, Autumn, John, and Piper; and several nieces and nephews.
Visitation will take place at Old Canoochee Primitive Baptist Church in Twin City, GA, from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, September 28, 2025. A funeral service will follow at 2:00 p.m., officiated by Rev. Larry Compton with words of remembrance by Rev. David Bohannon. After the service, Betty will be laid to rest next to Charles in the church cemetery.
Pallbearers will be P.O. Youmans, Jr., Wes Wilkes, Greg Gasque, Charles Alden Rountree, III, Ryan Rountree, Tristan Smith, Jhett Reeves, and Juddson Wilkes.

I always enjoyed visiting with Ms.Betty at the Hairport in Savannah. She was always so warm and sweet to everyone; and was a real asset to the Salon. Ms. Betty was a beautiful person, inside and out; and I will never forget her. Our world has lost another bright light. Sending my love, deepest sympathy, and prayers of peace and comfort to her family during this sad time. Nancy Harrison-Watson
